Dump City Dumplings now has a brick-and-mortar location
You’ve probably seen the Dump City Dumplings food cart downtown and at various events over the years. Since 2010, Dump City has specialized in, well, dumplings and now it’s not just a food cart—the owners have taken over the restaurant space on Upper Terrace Drive in the Old Mill District that has formerly housed a number of different restaurants, and are serving the signature dumplings plus expanded the menu to full meals.
Here’s the menu from a recent lunch visit:
There is also a full bar, with beer, cider, and cocktails available:
Overall, the dining room space is largely the same as it was from the previous tenants (that space has seen the Phoenix Cafe, Old Mill Brew Works, Rat Hole Brewpub, and Upper Terrace Eats, among other restaurant businesses). It’s fine, if plain, and is clean. And provides a nice spot for the local businesses to come in and grab a meal, or a drink—but the overall location, inside the Phoenix West building, is (and always has been) a bit odd and possibly confusing, because you have to enter the building first then enter the restaurant.
But the food is good, and if you’re a fan of Dump City, you’ll find their usual tasty dumplings plus more. When I had lunch there, I ordered the Teriyaki Chicken Plate, with a side of rice and a classic Chinese style pork dumpling. It was good and there was plenty of food, and I opted for a peanut sauce and teriyaki sauce from the options.
In addition to their classic dumplings (which I’m sure everyone’s familiar with from their food cart, right?) they have specials each day too, including a dessert dumpling that looks interesting. I haven’t tried any of those, but John Gottberg Anderson, the Bulletin’s food critic, did and his Bulletin review is here. The dessert dumplings change depending on the day.
I’ve only been there once so far, but from that experience I’d recommend it as worth checking out, and if you were already a Dump City fan then it’s a must-visit.
