Beer news roundup
It’s been awhile since I did a roundup of local beer news and happenings, so here’s a rundown to kick off the holiday week.
Tonight (Monday the 19th), the Platypus Pub will be hosting brewer Zach Beckwith from Three Creeks Brewing for a tasting from 6 to 8pm; there will be at least a couple of bottles pouring (I would guess Rudolph’s Imperial Red and the new Raptor Rye IPA) as well as a couple of Three Creeks beers on tap.
Today is also the 27th “birthday” of McMenamins’ flagship beer Terminator Stout—so over at the Old St. Francis School they are offering up $2.50 pints of Terminator all day today, along with bottles for $4.50. There are also food specials: Terminator chili, and Terminator sausage chili dog are on the menu.
Bend Brewing Company has their award-winning HopHead Imperial IPA on tap again, as well as having all of their current bottled offerings (Ching Ching, HopHead, Elk Lake IPA, Outback X and Doppelbock) available for sale—any of which would complement Thanksgiving dinner really well.
And speaking of Imperial IPA’s Silver Moon Brewing has their Hoptagon Imperial IPA back on tap and available in bottles as well. This is a big yet super-drinkable 8.6% IIPA with “millions and millions” of IBUs—meaning it’s really hoppy! Also listed on their site in the “upcoming” beer list are several that amused me: Apocalypto “End of Days” Ale, and Santa’s Hop Addiction.
10 Barrel Brewing‘s annual “Pray for Snow” party is on Black Friday (the 23rd) from 5 to 9pm! They’ll have live music from Scribbled Rhymes, MOsley WOtta, and Tango Alpha Tango, and they’ll burn the sacrificial “snow man” out on the Galveston pub’s patio. And if you’re looking for something a little more Thanksgiving-themed, they currently have three pumpkin ales on tap right now that you can order up a sampler of; I got this over the weekend and it was a good deal with tasty beers.
Also on Black Friday, Three Creeks Brewing has a very special beer release that they brewed to help Hoodoo Ski Resort commemorate their 75th anniversary: Hodag CDA (Cascadian Dark Ale, or “Black IPA” as it’s sometimes called). The party starts at 6pm at the Sisters brewpub and in addition to tasting they’ll be featuring a raffle (likely for their vertical tasting of Rudolph’s Imperial Red coming up in December).
Coming up a week from Thanksgiving, on Thursday the 29th, the Platypus Pub is planning a special three-year tasting with Deschutes Brewery of their Black Butte XX imperial porter anniversary ales! I believe they will have XXIII and XXIV and Deschutes will also have a special limited pour of the XXII (the one that was recalled). This will be a good event! No final word on time yet, but I would guess 6 to 8pm.
And finally, Deschutes Brewery’s award-winning imperial stout, The Abyss, was officially released last week and is on the shelves now. This year’s vintage costs $14 per bottle and is as good as ever; you’ll also find it on tap at the brewery (and possibly a select few other places).
