Plowing up the Past: How does the legacy of agricultural land use influence High Desert ecosystems today? @ McMenamins
May 10, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Underlying the vast sagebrush and grassland expanses of the Great Basin and the Columbia Plateau is a history of land use that is often forgotten. But even 50-100 years later, the legacies of abandoned agricultural development and range management are still affecting the vegetation, soils, hydrology and wildlife across these landscapes. This presentation will uncover these hidden legacies, explore their impacts today and reflect on ways in which the buried past can assist in future management. Join Dr. Lesley Morris, assistant professor of rangeland sciences at Eastern Oregon University, for this program. From the sagebrush-dominated landscapes of the Great Basin to the bunchgrass prairies of the Columbia Plateau, her research has focused on how land use legacies from historical cultivation and rangeland re-seeding projects affect recovery and restoration efforts.
