What is the Garage Series? Think about a throwback version of some of the more popular McMenamins beer selections from the last 30 years. Yes that’s right, 30 years of brewing has produced some pretty darn good beers and some very memorable stories. The Garage Series is a testament to those brewers and breweries that came before us in the grand design and paved a path that is worthy of some recognition.
The Oak Hills Brewpub in Northwest Portland is home to one of McMenamins favorite creations, Rhino Stout. In 1992 pub manager Troy Dockins approached brewery general manager Keith Mackie and made the suggestion that although customers truly enjoyed Terminator Stout®, with its robust flavor and full-body, a beer that was lighter and drier, but with the rich roasted character of Stout would be wonderful to try. Keith agreed and set to work designing a beer, Rhino Stout is the result of this design. Crafted with just enough pale malt to give the brew substance, and just enough dark malt to render a pronounced coffee and roast character, Rhino Stout is happy medium in the Stout-lovers world. Produced in very limited quantities at various McMenamins breweries throughout the nineties, both brewers and customers of McMenamins have enjoyed Rhino Stout whenever and wherever it poured. And now for a limited time Old St Francis School Brewery will be re-creating this recipe for all to experience and enjoy! Try a pint of a historic and popular McMenamins Stout!
