Join us for beer and history, sponsored by the the High Desert Museum, Des Chutes Historical Museum, the Oregon Encyclopedia, and McMenamins, in which you’ll hear lively local and regional history while you enjoy a frosty pint or two of handcrafted ale.
Presented by members of the Deschutes Collaborative Forest Project. This panel discussion will hear first-hand from representatives of environmental groups, the forest products industry, conservation organizations, recreation interests, the U.S. Forest Service and local government with a proven record of working collaboratively to solve complex natural resource challenges facing our public forest. Sadly, much of our prized forestlands – in particular our ponderosa pine-dominated forests – are highly altered after a centrury of overharvesting and fire suppression. As a result, they are now at much greater risk of unnaturally severe wildfires, insect outbreaks, and pathogens, and will grow more so given the predicted effects of climate change. For decades, disagreement between different interest groups over management priorities mired our forests in gridlock and contentious court battles.
