Indian removal was a 19th century policy of the United States government whereby Native Americans were removed from their ancestral homelands in the eastern United States to lands west of the Mississippi River, thereafter known as Indian Territory. The policy traced its direct origins to the administration of James Monroe, though it addressed conflicts between European Americans and Native Americans that had been occurring since the 17th century, and were escalating into the early 19th century as white settlers continually pushed westward.

Join Tim Alan Garrison, professor of American history, for a discussion on the Indian Removal Crisis of the 1830s. He will explore Andrew Jackson’s role in the development of federal policy that resulted in the forced relocation of Indian nations and how that policy impacted the American Indian peoples of Oregon.

Tim Alan Garrison is a professor of American history and the chair of the history department at Portland State University. He has written extensively on the Indian Removal Crisis of the 1830s.
